Official DG Coupon & Policy Guidelines

Key guidelines to ensure a smooth checkout experience based on DG's official policy.

Coupon Overages

  • If a coupon value is more than the price of the item, the remaining value will be applied to the balance of the transaction.
  • Coupon overages can only be applied to the balance and will not be given back as cash at the end of the transaction.
  • Overages will only apply to remaining store merchandise and cannot be applied to gift cards, pre-paid money cards, phone cards, alcohol, or tobacco.

Digital vs. Paper Conflict

If there is a conflict between a DG Digital Coupon and a Paper Coupon for the same item, the first one applied will be counted toward the transaction and the other will not, regardless of value.

The Penny Policy

  • Items that ring up for $0.01 are out-of-system (salvage) merchandise that employees missed when pulling from the sales floor.
  • If a customer finds a penny item on the sales floor, the store must sell it to the customer for $0.01.
  • Employees are not allowed to check the stockroom for penny items, and once the customer purchases the items they found, employees must immediately pull any remaining identical items from the floor.

Important Restrictions

  • Limit of 5 identical coupons per household per day (if no limit is specified on the coupon).
  • Only one Dollar General Digital Coupon Account is permitted per person.
  • Transactions cannot be broken up to avoid coupon stacking restrictions.

Allowed Stacking Scenarios

Dollar General allows a maximum of two coupons per item under specific conditions. Here is exactly what you can and cannot stack:

ALLOWED: 1 MFR + 1 Store

Only one Manufacturer Coupon and one Dollar General Coupon can be used per item in a transaction.

Note: Unless labeled a "DG Store Coupon" in the Digital Coupon Gallery, DG Digital Coupons are considered Manufacturer Coupons.

ALLOWED: Multiple DG Store Coupons

The stacking of 2 or more Dollar General Coupons in a transaction is allowed unless otherwise noted on the coupon or associated promotional art.

NOT ALLOWED: Multiple Manufacturer Coupons

Stacking of 2 or more Manufacturer Coupons per item is not allowed. Manufacturer DG Digital Coupons cannot be combined with any other type of Manufacturer coupon on the same item in a single transaction.

Checkout Checklist

Step Action Pro Tip
1. Digital App Setup Clip coupons inside the DG app prior to arriving at the register. Avoid clipping duplicate store & mfr coupons for the same item unless testing a stack.
2. Threshold Calculation Verify subtotal hits your threshold before any coupons register. Paper $5/$25 coupons scan first; digital $5/$25 auto-applies when typing your phone number.
3. Pinpad Entry Type your phone number into the pinpad before the cashier hits "Total". Ensures all clipped digital store and manufacturer coupons apply seamlessly.
